ROAD COLLAPSE IN THE CENTER OF RIGA: TWO CARS FELL INTO THE GROUND
Early in the morning on Gertrudes street there was an incredible incident by the standards of Riga. At the moment of movement, two cars were trapped. The gap formed under the paving stones pulled the Mercedes and BMW. As it turned out, the cause of the failure was old pipes that could not withstand the pressure at the time of testing. Now there is a trial on this issue, as the owners of cars require compensation from utilities.One motorist was able to get out of the hole on his own, despite the fact that the depth was almost one and a half meters. But the second one needed the help of special equipment. I was never injured, which is very important, since the car was moving at a very low speed.
At the moment, all the consequences of the collapse have been eliminated, and the pipes on the site have been replaced. It also became known that the heating line running along Gertrudes street has been used for more than 57 years, as well as other pipes in the center of Riga. Therefore, we should expect a repeat collapse, which may occur during the next hydraulic tests. Heating networks need to be completely updated, and this should be done as quickly as possible.
